Our History

The history of Monteiro Insurance Brokers can be traced to 1968, when Jose Monteiro began selling insurance and financial products in Galt, Ontario.  He had arrived in Canada from his native Portugal in 1964, leaving behind the island of Santa Maria, where he had been raised and educated. His knowledge of English allowed him to help new Portuguese immigrants upon their arrival in Cambridge. He would help them find employment, housing, offered translation services, and aided them in any way he could. This idea of service to the community continues as our mission at Monteiro Insurance.

Paul Monteiro, Jose’s son, joined the family firm in April, 1990. Now, the Principal Broker of Monteiro Insurance Brokers Ltd, he holds a Canadian Accredited Insurance Broker designation (CAIB), a level 2 Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario License, and an Ontario Life Insurance Agents License. Paul is alumnus of the University of Western Ontario, and holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a master's degree in Public Administration. Following the example set by his father, Paul believes in giving back to the community. He is a past treasurer and vice-president of the Canadian Diabetes Association Cambridge Branch and served on the City of Cambridge Riverbank Development Advisory Committee. He has been a strong supporter of local charities and community events.

Teresa Lima joined Monteiro Insurance Brokers in 1977 and has been an integral part of MIB’s sustained growth since her joining. She holds a Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario License and is assistant manager of the firm.
